Peritoneal Dialysis

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a treatment for kidney failure that uses the lining of the abdomen to filter blood. It's a good option for people who want more independence and a flexible treatment schedule.

How it works

1. A surgeon places a catheter in the abdomen, usually near the belly button

2. A dialysis solution is pumped into the abdomen through the catheter

3. The solution absorbs waste and extra fluid from the blood vessels in the abdomen

4. The used solution is drained and replaced with fresh solution

How often it's done

1. The frequency of exchanges depends on the type of PD and other factors

2. Continuous cyclic peritoneal dialysis (CCPD) is usually done at night while you sleep

3. Automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) is done overnight while you sleep
