Acute Kidney Failure

Acute kidney failure, also known as acute kidney injury (AKI), is a sudden loss of kidney function that can lead to kidney failure. It occurs when the kidneys can't remove waste or balance electrolytes and fluids in the body.


Symptoms

Decreased urine output

Swelling in the legs, ankles, or feet

Fatigue

Shortness of breath

Confusion or mood changes

High blood pressure

Decreased appetite

Nausea

Pain in the side of the back

Chest pain or pressure

Causes

Infections

Conditions that cause reduced blood flow to the kidneys

Medications that damage the kidneys

Blood clots

Cholesterol deposits

Glomerulonephritis, a condition that causes inflammation of the kidney filters

Treatment

Early detection and treatment is important

If the kidneys shut down completely, dialysis may be required
