Ocular Surface & EYE Injury Care

"Ocular surface and eye injury care" refers to the treatment and management of injuries affecting the outer surface of the eye, including the cornea, conjunctiva, and eyelids, which requires immediate attention to prevent further damage and promote proper healing; key aspects include not rubbing the eye, gently flushing with clean water if necessary, covering the eye with a protective shield, and seeking immediate medical attention for serious injuries.

First aid steps

Do not rub the eye : Rubbing can worsen the injury and introduce further contamination.

Gently flush with clean water : For foreign particles or chemical splashes, gently flush the eye with clean water or saline solution.

Cover the eye : Use a clean cloth or eye shield to protect the injured eye and prevent further damage.

Do not attempt to remove embedded objects : If something is lodged in the eye, do not try to remove it yourself.

Depending on the type of eye injury

Foreign object in the eye : Try blinking to naturally flush out the particle, then gently lift the eyelid to remove it with a clean tissue if possible.

Chemical burn : Immediately flush the eye with copious amounts of clean water for at least 15 minutes.

Corneal abrasion : May be treated with lubricating eye drops or antibiotic ointment depending on severity.
